Okay folks, the contest games are over and now it comes down to a vote. As you can see by this image, I’m getting killed in the social media vote. But, I’m 42-years-old, which in social media terms ranks me up there with the third guy over in the evolution chart. If you feel like voting, have at it, it will be much appreciated. I have to say, I’d not entered a contest of any sort for a long, long while, and the overall experience has been valuable as well as challenging. I have to say, totally worth doing. I still can’t believe Cathay Pacific was focused enough to fly us all to Hong Kong, put us up and arranging for us to compete. Think about the logistics and planning required. Well done CP.

You really think it’s the age? I am betting more that it is the male thing. After years of clinical research here is what gets the online vote for sure…
Semi-okay-looking or better female. End of story. Now you may be thinking that I am way off the mark here but looking at all of the people you are up against I will put my money on the females in this online popularity contest.
The one ringer we have is the guy that is currently leading by ONE vote and he is fine tuned in getting only votes – unlike the rest of you rabble. He has probably been doing the on-line following thing for fun and profit for a while.
Take it from a former marketing guy (amongst other things) You want the votes you need a hot female face (some times more). I have done studies on this effect – it’s even more prevalent in the anonymous interweb world. I will give you example after example if you want it. The content / merit is a distant second.
I have won more accounts with carefully calculated inappropriate female event/sales call staffing than you could imagine.

I never really thought about it, that. If I had social media when I was younger I’m sure I’d be on it as well. Heck, I’m still on it, but the skill level I have isn’t perhaps where my younger friends are. It’s a major part of life these days, and has probably taken over as news delivery method of choice.

I watched looked through all the videos and photos on Cathay’s Facebook page. You’re currently in 4th place (as of 1:41pm EST), so that’s a huge improvement from last place! The two entries in the lead where more what I’d expect to see in a travel show — you know, a “personality” showing the you the sights and sounds, etc. Honestly, that doesn’t really appeal to me. Your entry had the best photographs by far, and is the most intellectually and aesthetically nuanced — it’s thoughtful. Though I could be biased since I’m a photographer! At any rate, you got my vote. I’ll tweet it and put a status update on Facebook, and try to get the word out.

Despite what Robert (above) thinks, you shouldn’t discount the female vote…you would definitely win the “best looking male” vote, but you also happen to be a fantastic photographer and for that reason you get my vote.

The night they released the site I had exactly 7 votes. David and I were laughing and I said, “That seems about right.” I wrote a post here, posted on FB and Twitter and something happened……my wife found it. She blasted it out, and I have to say, people have been more than generous with their time. As you know, the value of this vote…not really sure, but I find it interesting I’m somehow in the lead. I’m back in full work mode now, so I’ve got to move on to other duties but it has been interesting to say the least.
Daniel, I just wanted to say that whether you win the social vote or not your work stands tall above the rest. I watched most of the other stuff and read some of the entries but all of it seemed very thin. I could get that kind of thing off of Google. I loved the little video clips. So I voted for you work. And regardless of how many people rally around their person and push them to the top, I still think your project is the best.
